The Orchestra | ||
|
The orchestra was formed in the 1960s by Leonard Davis, a prominent
orchestral conductor, who trained and nurtured the players to a high
standard into a well-respected orchestra. Upon Len's retirement in the
1970s, a highly recommended successor, Julian Williamson took over and we are
fortunate that he has chosen to remain as our conductor ever since. Over 50 years the very varied programmes have included Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart as might be expected, but the orchestra has also courageously tackled music by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, and even some contemporary composers including our own talented Valerie MacMillan. The music is thus interesting, but not technically challenging. The orchestra is run voluntarily by the members and aimed at people who prefer to play in the daytime. It has a friendly atmosphere and is open to all string players. There are no auditions - you can come and listen and decide whether the SLSO might be for you.

Over the last twenty years, Julian has been associated with a
large number of orchestras and choirs. He has performed regularly at the South Bank, at St John's Smith Square and the Barbican Hall where, apart from his many concerts with the Camden Choir, he has appeared with the London Bach Orchestra and the English Festival Choir. His work has taken him not only to many parts of Great Britain, but also to Germany, Holland, Zimbabwe and the USA.
